On the subject of California:

You can file the Mexican-American War under "Land Grab" in that
the whole war was really an attempt to get Texas away from Mexico.
It was not a just war with a fair outcome.   Texas split away and
became part of the USA, but the war reparations the USA demanded
were confiscatory.  About one-third of the land area of the USA lower
48 was demanded, and that included California.  While they were
grabbing, WHY didn't they grab the southern half of California Province
too (Baja California)?  There had been some discussion of it, but in
the end, it was left part of Mexico.

I guess the total inhumanity of having the USA Army camped on the main
plaza in front of the legislative building and the Metropolitan Cathedral
finally pushed the USA to have mercy.
