It was huge, BTW, that Mary and Anne could read, even in legend.
Female literacy rates have always been lower than men’s.
(My grandmother’s grandmother, born in 1809, could not sign her own name.
I know this because I have property records signed with a witnessed X.)
So the idea that Anne taught Mary to read was a miracle in itself.
