When Cynthia McFarland died in 2014 I handled the estate etc.
What I found then was that if a newspaper thought that a person was 
newsworthy they would print the obituary free of charge; if not, they 
would charge at approximately the same rate as an advertisement. The 
Philadelphia Inquirer felt that her life was newsworthy and published it 
free. The Burlington County Times did not.
