[Magdalen] $Obituaries?

My mom’s obit in the Houston chronicle was less then 2”, priced by the line, narrow column and was $175. I was amazed. Funeral homes often handle this cost while adding it to the package price. I did not go the funeral home route.

What I found then was that if a newspaper thought that a person was newsworthy they would print the obituary free of charge; if not, they would charge at approximately the same rate as an advertisement. The Philadelphia Inquirer felt that her life was newsworthy and published it free. The Burlington County Times did not.
