Prayers for kitty Hermés. A spoonful of olive oil in the food daily often
keeps this from happening. I gave my longhaired cats this as a matter of
convenience to prevent hairballs, but soon found it worked for shorthairs
too. You might try it. Also, do you have one of those little windowboxes
with "kitty greens" for them to nibble on (and which you can buy seed to
replant)? Otherwise, I'm sure the vet is going to advise a change of diet
which may be expensive.
