I remember how shocked I was when a good friend told me his family had been owned by Quakers! Quakers!!!
Apparently it wasn’t all that uncommon, and they didn’t become abolitionists all at once...
Lee Smith has written a wonderful novel about this very phenomenon, in which a Quaker family was split over the issue. It’s called “On Agate Hill,” and for folks who love Smith’s writing as much as I do, it’s a must-read.
