I don't remember seeing a bottle of olive oil in our homegrowing up in the forties and fifties.  The only Olive Oilthat those Germans and Scandinavians in the USA UpperMidwest had ever heard about was the character in thePopeye cartoon strips.

I still remember having breakfast at a hotel in the PortugueseAlgarve, and noting that my fried eggs, sunny side up, tastedrather odd, and then realizing that they had been cooked inolive oil.

How times and customs have changed!  The cooking showsI watch on PBS television seem to float on olive oil (extra virgin, thank you).  Every house wife/husband in the Upper MidwestUSA now cooks with much olive oil, and little of the butterproduced on the regional farms.  Even the experts haverelaxed somewhat and butter is not the vicious killer of adecade or two ago.

I still prefer my eggs cooked in butter, thank you.  I'll dutifullytake my simvastatin at bedtime tonight.
