I can’t think of any visit to the ER here that would cost elfas little as $500! Maybe the ambulance ride, if it was a private company, but definitely not the ER itself.

It's a heck of a sight cheaper than what happens in the USA and is far better value for money on whatever measure you choose. There are people who say that an insurance-based system is what we need but they often have links to insurance companies. I was born a year or so before the NHS came in and I certainly want it still to be here when I breathe my last.
