I understand all the possible interpretations of 'remembrance, and the theological sacramental implications. What I do not understand is how  'for the' creates a different meaning from 'in'. In fact to me, 'for the' is if anything more remote, and is certainly linguistically and grammatically odd. Doing something 'for' the remembrance suggests it is for someone else's remembrance, whereas 'in' is more direct and personal.

I wonder whether this was just someone's bright idea on a committee and no one could be bothered to argue or analyse. Quite a lot of liturgical reform, in peripheral contexts, happens that way. I just wondered whether there was some deep meaning I was missing.

I believe this problem is because of the direct translation into English of the Latin"in memoriam."   The English "in memory of" is not an exact translation of the Latin.
