Actually, the "Real ID" stuff preceded Trump by quite a bit - I think it 
dates back to Bush II. Just renewed my "fancy" Real ID driver's license, 
which allows me to cross the border 40 miles north of here, whenever 
they may decide to open it up.

That said, state DMV's are famous for bureaucratic nonsense - at least 
the Massachusetts one was (Vermont's much better). Much commiserations -
