A friend who teaches linguistics claims the strong verbs have been
disappearing from the English language, especially in the United States,
for many decades.

Give gave given
is much more difficult to learn and remember than
gift gifted gifted.

The one that surprises me is shine.
I learned
shine shone shone
but I often hear news broadcasters say shined.
