Whereas, in OZ, 'tonic' water is carbonated>>>

In the USA Midwest, tonic water usually contains quinine and
a traditional way to flavor it is from berries of the Juniper genus.
In any case, a simple taste of one of the bluish berries of the
extremely common and widespread USA tree, Eastern Red Cedar
(Juniperus virginiana) will give you a gin and tonic flavor.

If one asks for "soda" there (Midwest), it may well bring a look of
puzzlement
on the server's face, but you'll usually get soda water = plain carbonated
water.

"Pop" reigns supreme for the colas and other sweet carbonated
beverages. I've lived away from the Midwest now so long (30 years)
that it now sounds odd to me, and a slight bit corny to use the word,
"pop."
