In their heyday, the Berrigans weren't nearly the outliers the nuns on the bus 
are. They were more "seamless garment" activists who included war in that 
seamless garment, much to the irritation of a large number of bishops, and much 
to the delight of people who projected all manner of other progressive causes 
they did not share.

Let me hasten to add that their lives subsequently took some twists and turns 
far away from RC orthodoxy, but as one who knew them well back in the day, I 
have to say that was a completely different phase.

Daniel Berrigan remained orthodox enough that he has long passed muster as a 
faculty member at Fordham University -- even as RC clergy were otherwise purged 
for non-orthodox views. Last I ran into him, he was living in Brooklyn.
