Anesthesia (as a speciality): Hours of boredom punctuated by moments
of terror.
For many procedures these days, hypnotics and sedatives are employed,
and no real anesthesia with its accompanying need for intubation and
breathing support, etc.
I had too much exposure to anesthesiology when I was in medical school
and also during my year of internship (internships still existed then).
UW-Madison
had a strong history of anesthesiology at that time, and some of the
general
anesthetics in general use originated at Wisconsin.
There was so much surgery going on there that senior medical students often
ended up as the sole anesthetic person, with periodic visits by the chief
anesthesia specialist during the course of the procedures.
I can recall being in a large operating room during a procedure on the
brain of an epileptic. The entire neurosurgery and neurology faculty
were in the room. And there I was, a senior medical student, the only
anesthesia representative, shaking in my boots.
I resolved to get as far away from anesthesiology as possible. Dermatology
was a good choice.
