And of course, there are millions of Americans who simply don’t drink at
all for
religious or other reasons. Mormons, many conservative evangelicals
etc.have
never touched the stuff, and aren’t likely to start. Certainly my
conservative
religionist cousins fall into that category; and when my folks were first
married, Aunt Cornelia dumped the entire family liquor cabinet down the
sink,
thus imposing her religious views on the family.>>>>>>
There was the annual temperance pledge in such as the Methodist
Church of my youth. By signing this you assured that you would
never drink. The oddity is that we were expected to sign it yearly.
Go figure.
In any case, it was recognized, but not much verbalized, that
"firewater" (as my father sometimes called it) was not good for my
family, and the best course was total abstinence. All this did not
prevent two of his four children from becoming addicted. Interestingly,
two of four brothers, my father's sibs (a dentist and a physician), also
had the addiction and actually died of complications.
My children have been forewarned. So far,so good.
David Strang - with 31 years away from firewater 27th December.
