I used to know a man who survived Pearl Harbor, and was on the Arizona,
except that he was ashore at the time of the attack. His brother died
on the ship, and what's left of him is still on it. Carl, the one I
knew, was 17 at the time: his brother was 19. He fought through the
war, came home, and became a cop in Columbus, Kansas, Police Chief at
the time I knew him, through to retirement.
