Sister Joan Chittister OSB, has been a champion of the liberal wing
of the Roman Catholic Church for a long time.  What is really  amazing
is that she manages to dodge the sanctioning (in the sense of  punishing)
some of the conservatives would impose on her if they could.   They
would love to see her muzzled.
 
The Benedictine umbrella fortunately tolerates considerable leeway
and protection that she would not have if she were directly under the
authority of a local bishop.
