One of the reasons I used to like to go to the Spanish Mass at St.
Patrick's in Morristown, TN, was the music, which was enhanced by presence
of the large number of young men in the congregation, who sang fervently,
if not always tunefully. It was a delight to be with that group, who took
literally the injunction to "make a joyful noise to the Lord.">>>>>>
I attended the Spanish Mass at Newark, NJ's mammoth Sacred Heart
Cathedral on a number of occasions. It always struck me that all the
tunes for this Liturgy all sounded the same. One hymn seemed to
meld into another, and then into the Ordinary. There certainly couldn't
be any complaints that there was not a musical unity.
But actually, it seemed a rather pleasant anachronism to have liturgical
music of such a style in a grand gothic revival cathedral, probably
New Jersey's largest church with a four manual pipe organ, one of
the State's largest, sitting there in the real gallery totally unused.
The English Masses at Sacred Heart paled by comparison.
