Marcel Breurer also designed St. Francis De Sales parish Church in
Muskegon. It closely resembles a concrete bunker from the outside.

So does the Abbey at Saint John's in MN.
There was a period when it was all the rage to have buildings
of exposed concrete. At UW-Madison, Saint Paul's the RC
student chapel, was, a neogothic building with a large altarpiece
and much stained glass. The authorities decided to remodel
the chapel.
The existing building was completely razed and a bare,
most brutal concrete structure replaced it. As if to remind
that there was once a lovely chapel on the site, carved wooden
statues from the original chapel were mounted on the walls
here and there.
Now that concrete structure is being torn down with a new,
lighter, mostly glass chapel to replace it only about 35 years later.
I don't think anyone is mourning the concrete bunker.
