Mike why is it L O G S as in Sam?

My last name by marriage, Ronkainen, is Finnish. It has a distinctly guttural  sound in Europe and in areas of the US where Finns live in high concentrations. My former MIL found the pronunciation too provincial for her east coast upbringing so, claiming the need to make it easier to pronounce and/or spell,  completely changed the syllable and pronunciation emphasis. In our two generations is has been moderately confusing especially if operating outside of one's local community which she never did. 
"We" say Ron Kay nin
. UP of MI (and WI, MN) say Ronk eh nin
I think my kids are having an easier time with the 3rd generation pronunciation adaptation LOL
