Marcy and I did that two years ago when it became clear that we would have to move or make changes to our living space. We brought in a builder and we made modifications to enable Marcy to live entirely on the main floor - ADA compliant bathroom downstairs, a ramp from the garage into the house, remove wall to wall carpeting and replace with hardwood (rustic oak), barn doors to close of what was the living room and is now our bedroom.
Having seen Jim's house I can only say that I believe the builder made a
very good job of the modifications.

I am closing in on my own "three score years and ten" but I would
suggest that at least two of those issues should be regarded as
important for those considerably younger. A will is important to ensure
that your worldly assets go where you want rather than where intestacy
rules dictate. (If you have a partner being in a legally recognized
relationship is also important here.) If there are children and both
parents die in an accident who would you want as their guardians? If
you are in a blended family this brings in other considerations. (Memo,
must revise my own will.)
End of life planning may also become important at a relatively early age
if you experience a traumatic brain injury. What life-sustaining
measures should be undertaken? (Memo, must draw up my own instructions
in this regard.)
