I was glad Michigan was first to abolish the death penalty; at least
that's what we were taught. I could look it up...Wikipedia says:

"Michigan was the first English-speaking government in the world to
totally abolish the death penalty for ordinary crimes. The Michigan
State Legislature voted to do so on May 18, 1846, and this has
remained in law since."

Of course, there are forces on the right seeking to change this.

Illinois has the death penalty, but I think we're still under
governor/convict George Ryan's moratorium on same (which I support,
even though he was a crook).
