Gosh, I wondered what was wrong with me! Now I know it's all my daddy's
fault!>>>>>>
Blue Lodge Masons (the common variety) have largely disappeared from
the mainstream of USA life. All my relatives were either Masons or
Eastern Star (for women, but with Masonic oversight). Some of them
even started out in the youth groups, DeMolay and Job's Daughters.
There were lodges in every little town, at least where I was growing up
in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Only one in perhaps 5 now exists. No one of my family generation
bothered to become active in the Masons --- not one of my four sibs,
for example. I even doubt whether family members younger even
know what Masons are. Perhaps they have heard about Shriners,
and that's about it.
I have nothing against the Masonic Orders. Goodness knows my family
members active in them were good people. But gone are the days when
weeknight church activities would feature all the men coming into the
nave still wearing their Masonic aprons.
The experience of coming to the (open) annual Eastern Star installation of
new
officers, and watching 20 or so slightly portly ladies in white evening
gowns
strut about the lodge floor is no longer. 'Tis a shame.
David Strang.
