All of that pile of stuff has to be manufactured and pass tolerances so
that when you engage, the car moves instead of exploding or merely grinding
the parts into scrap. This costs money even when the tranny is rebuilt.

If it makes anyone feel any better, the dollar is worth much less these
days, so $2000 is far cheaper than it has ever been before. If you think
about it, it's quite a bargain (well, think about it, and squinch your
eyes, so the images go all blurry...)
