I've gotten very interested in railroads in my old age, and have
nostalgia for the 17 mile Northern Pacific (now BNSF) spur that served
my home town in Wisconsin 1881 - 1951. The terminus of that line
was at the local Gedney Pickle Factory, and I recall seeing the commercial
pickling process. There were several large (about 8' diameter) wooden
vats filled with cucumbers to pickles. The vat contents were covered with
a white foam, and the whole place reeked of pickling spices. It was
enough to turn me off pickles for the rest of the summer.
As for the railroad spur, it's all been turned into trails for small
vehicles
and for hiking. Better that, I guess, than just getting overgrown and
disappearing entirely.
Still, I miss the belching smoke of the steam engines.
David Strang.
