>My first trip along the Mississippi Palisades was by car and it was an unforgettable view. It was in my late childhood. It was a good 60 years ago so my memory is a bit confused. It was to visit my Grandfather's grave in Stillwater. I think we took the train to St Paul and my adopted grandparents met us somewhere in Mn. We went to visit the grave in Stillwater and then I think we drove back to Chicago all five of us. that must be the time I was in the Hiawatha observation car. My parents did nothing to discourage my locomotive proclivities. I wanted to be a train engineer before I decided to become a priest, so they would give me train trips for my birthday. I remember that trip was Columbus Day weekend when they would off from school on Monday. (They were both teachers)

So we must have gone up to St Paul by train, and come back by car (which is very typical for my parents) How we got from St Paul to Stillwater in 1955 is anyone's guess. The adoptive grandparents may have picked us up at the station, but I do remember visiting his grave and driving back down the Palisades. I think we stayed in a motel and played 5 handed pinochle in the motel room. (Also a typical recreation pour nos cinq)
