Your son's thoughts feel so familiar, Ginga.

I am probably helped by realizing a few days ago that the level of
support Trump had meant that, whether we won or lost, half the country
would feel hurt and left out of our political leadership in a way that
seemed more pronounced than most elections.

So I have been trying to figure out how to stand up for what is right &
oppose what is wrong, without acting in ways that unnecessarily promote
more division. In ways that respect the dignity of every human being,
including those who disagree with me.

I still have no idea HOW to find that path, and I expect that I will
miss the mark more often than I hit it over the next four years, and
that there are likely to be situations where there are no paths that
avoid compromising one side or the other of that equation. But I worry
about what happens if the depth of division we have seen over the last
several years continues, almost as much as I worry about the future
actions of a President Trump with a Republican-controlled Congress.
