There was the infamous case of pulmonary TB at the VAMC in
Madison, Wisconsin. At the time (1950's) the VAMC there was
allied with the UW-Madison Medical School, but occupied a
hospital building some miles from the rest of the complex (It is now
fully integrated and surrounded by the main "new" Medical School
complex).
Somehow 8 medical students and several staff physicians were
improperly shielded during the autopsy of a patient who had
pulmonary TB. All dozen or so present promptly developed pulmonary
TB. It was not a pretty picture.
