I sing/chant whether there's a choir or not. (I am in the choir at
Dormition, Winchester)

On 21 August, I was at the liturgy at Holy Trinity, Raleigh. They have a
note in the bulletin for the congregation to join the choir in
singing/chanting, but not many do. That Sunday, I was in the very back and
the Greek woman next to me was also singing/chanting. After communion, she
said to me "Congratulations!" and I thought at first it was because I had
gone up for communion but then she added "You know all the Greek in the
liturgy!"

One problem I have is when I have a different English translation than the
one the choir or psaltis uses. (Especially on the hymns of the day). We
had ongoing muttering about the lack of any "Kyrie eleison" responses
after our current presiding priest arrived two years ago. Our practice is
generally to respond in the same language the priest uses (Greek or
English) and Fr Panagiotis uses nearly all English on Sunday (Fr Milton and
Fr Stanley had switched back and forth during the petitions). Hence, only
"Lord, Have Mercy!" He told us he is charge of the liturgy! Well, six
weeks ago the choir director told us that from now on we always respond
"Kyrie eleison": so says Fr Panagiotis.

In Christ,

Kate

"What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love mercy, and walk
humbly with your God?"
