What Jay said.  House construction/ renovation is grounds for divorce, also complete nervous breakdown(s).  My mother had a charming condo in Portland, ME, with a washer/dryer unit in a hall closet.  I had stacked machines in my kitchen in my previous house.

Better to buy a house that you both like, as it is.
