it was a great gift to have an organist/choirmaster/music
director who knew Anglican music and had a good feel for scripture,
liturgical seasons, and liturgy as a whole. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This is the ideal, of course: to have such a music director
and clergy who recognize that director's expertise, and give
him/her wide leeway.
This has been the story, apparently, at famous St. Thomas 5th Avenue,
NYC, where the music is on a top level with Anglican locations throughout
the world. This was certainly the case with Rector John Andrew and
O/C Gerre Hancock, and with Rector Mead and O/C John Scott.
It can be tolerable at best, and positively horrible at worst when there is
constant bickering and disagreement between clergy and musicians,
and I've seen that too often, unfortunately.
