>>>(tricky because that's not always the word order
in German, and you have to wait for the verb at the
end of the sentence)<<<

Sounds Latinate. Which it of course isn't.

During my one year of Latin in college (effectively replacing two years of a "living" language + language lab, which happened during lunchtime, no way no how) I enjoyed the lack of required syntax. In high school French (which though of course is Latin-based) I never once managed composition in anything like an acceptable degree because I would merely take an English sentence in my head and replace the words with French ones.

Besides other more insurmountable reasons, one of the reasons I bailed on a Master's in English literature was the more or less expectation of my having to learn French (learn it properly, that is) and German in order to absorb extra-English criticism. I basically can't learn languages. (I know, I know: "Babbel", Mike! I'd rather have the Babel Fish, if you please'm.) I'm better with Scotch brogue, to be honest, though I'd never be stupid enough to use it in public.
