There’s a wonderful book called (IIRC) We All Spoke Sign Language Here.
It’s about Martha’s Vineyard, where there was a large population of
deaf people (isolated community/recessive gene). The community invented
a sign language over several generations and everyone learned it.
Extremely helpful in storms and on fishing boats, they said.
