You must not take in much televisual media.  Beards, and what passes for them, are all over the place.  Now, I'm no expert on what women like, but I can't imagine many men would go to such effort if there wasn't some payoff in that area.  If anyone recalls my pic with Brian Reid of a while back, you'll know that I'm obviously no beard well-keeper.  But every now and then I get the bug to actually trim the thing to something like a reasonable appearance, if only because I sometimes (sometimes, mind you) get tired of the deference to the Aged Venerable One, sometimes from people I reasonably assume are actually older than myself.  It's always a gasp-elicitor when some learn I'm "only 52".

As for salt and pepper, I was the stray grey hair sort until about 2003-2004.  Someone at work once asked me, very politely, and with apologies upfront, why it was I turned nearly shock white "overnight".  I replied, "Divorce, and ordination."  Most only understand the first part.
