We think of oregano as Italian (and it’s certainly ubiquitous in southern Italian cooking) but it’s actually Greek. A friend who was an archaeologist told me they could trace Greek colonization in Italy by looking for wild-growing oregano. The Greeks loved it so much they planted it wherever they went. -M
