[Magdalen] Women's tournament

Warning: this turned out to be long—I’m not sure why!

I’ve never been a sports fan of any kind—except to the extent of saying I like this or that team, usually because of geography. When I was at Michigan, I signed up for the “Block M” group, because I was a freshman and thought it would be fun to hold up those cards. Didn’t realize we wouldn’t be able to see much of anything! I’m not sure I even went to any games after that year. I remember seeing Roger Staubach when we played Navy, and I think their mascot was an actual goat. UM wasn’t very good in those days, but the year after I graduated, they went to the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

I did go to one basketball game there in the old, leaky field house.

The more I hear folks talking about sports, though—and especially women’s basketball—the more I’m thinking it might be fun to go to some games. UVa is just down the road, and I have friends who have season tickets and never miss a game.
I’ve been to one professional soccer game, way back when Pele was playing, and one professional baseball game in Baltimore, which was so boring I almost fell asleep.

But in my advancing age, I find I’m a little jealous of folks like you who can talk so knowledgeably about what’s going on with your favorite teams and players! So maybe I’ll try to get a ticket to a women’s game at UVa, unless the season is over. Is it?

One year when I was directing a church choir here, there was some talk at choir rehearsal about the possibility of having to change rehearsal because of some important UVa game. I earned scorn and disbelief from the whole group when I asked which sport it was!
