I was first introduced to this grand Durufle organ piece, "Veni Creator Spiritus,"
on Pentecost weekend on the occasion of touring Ulm Cathedral with
my family back in the 1960's. The three of us - daughter, son and myself
had just climbed the Ulm Cathedral tower, tallest in the world at 560+ ft.
That was a terrifying experience for me because the paving stone was well
worn and irregular and my kids were running around the edge of the tower
finial with no regard to the height.
Anyway, we entered the Ulm Cathedral (It is a Lutheran church and has
never been a cathedral) to the overwhelming sound of the organ variations
on the familiar Pentecost chant.
When I sang in the local Procathedral choir, groups of choir members
chanted a versefollowed by the appropriate organ variation
as a prelude to the main Eucharist for Pentecost.
