[Magdalen] Where are we

We're here quarantining in Edgewater, Chicago. We've been pretty strict
about pandemic measures, prompted mainly by me, I think. We said no
(nicely) to some friends who wanted to stay with us while in the area one
weekend in late spring, and we (nicely) declined a kind invitation to visit
with a fellow parishioner in her apartment. I've made clear to my mom in
Michigan that I don't like my sister-in-law's frequent gatherings,
including a big one for Thanksgiving. I think holidays become an idol
sometimes, and things like the big smiling family photo in front of the
fireplace absolutely cannot be done without. Mom says "they try to be
careful," and I heard myself say that ICUs are filled with people who were
being careful but wanted to do just this one thing. My brother tested
positive and had some symptoms but mainly was affected by a prescribed
steroid, which raised his blood sugar level quite a lot (he's Type 1
diabetic). He's doing better now and was quarantining in his (finished)
basement.

I'm working from home, as my purpose in life is to earn the paycheck for
the two of us, and it would be great if it could stretch just a smidge
farther than it does. The war against debt is waged twice a month at
payday. I get out mainly for cat supplies and sometimes for CVS; Scott the
Younger gets out more for groceries unless I get a good Aldi haul via
InstaCart.

Our Benedictine community meets every Sunday afternoon via Zoom. I attend
that one and the 10 a.m. Mass from our parish church. We'll be entering the
church building for the first time since March on Christmas Eve to pray for
an hour as part of a vigil; no one else will be in the church at that time.

I am having some trouble focusing and I need to get out more for
exercise...common problems, I'm sure. I do have so much to be thankful for.
The pandemic did not disrupt my job at all, and we're doing fine and
keeping the bills paid and the house warm for us and our furry companions.
