Remember the colorful quarantine signs the health authoritiesmounted at the front door?  Each disease had a different color.Sometimes there were so many children affected with variousconditions - red and German measles, chicken pox, mumps. etc. -that the neighborhoods looked as though in holiday decor.
The dreaded diseases were scarlet fever and otitis media.  A
handful of modern antibiotics might have handled thoseconditions nicely, but were not around in the 1930's -1940's.Scarlet fever, infection with a variety of strep, and otitismedia due to the same or other bacteria or viruses arethe usual causes.  Those poor kids were at home for sixweeks or more, and there were possible heart and kidney complicationsespecially if rheumatic fever complicated.  Those quarantinedhomes were given wide berth
